The tool to do this is the business planning process where ideas can be tested, goals can be set, issues can be determined, and responsibility can be assigned. Essentially, the business plan is a way for owners, principals, CEO’s, CFO’s and presidents to set benchmarks for accountability, themselves included. I have helped a lot of companies, but I don’t use their names in the testimonials for one main reason: they don’t want their competition to find out. In some cases, I am part of their strategy because I bring to the table the ability to set in motion methodologies to make things happen.

The wrong reason to do a strategic/business/marketing plan is because a consultant says it’s the thing to do. The main reason why business planning works is hidden in the planning process. The origin of many business challenges often is deeply rooted in a company’s culture. Strategy, marketing, operations, finance, project management, human resources, and other areas of a construction company often are only reflections of that company’s culture. There is always resistance to change. The dynamics of a true planning process is that people began to understand what the company culture is all about, and take ownership of their own areas of responsibility as well as helping others with their areas of responsibility. When this happens an immediate transformation takes place, and as a result, the company is suddenly much more productive. The result is bottom line improvement.
